Gravesend mugger jailed for two years

News Shopper: Paul Kelly. Paul Kelly.

A Longfield man has been jailed after he robbed a man in Gravesend.

Paul Kelly, of Foxwood Way, was sentenced to two years and two months imprisonment by a judge at Maidstone Crown Court on July 7.

The 44-year-old pleaded guilty to one charge of robbery after he assaulted and stole money from a vulnerable man in Darnley Street on September 2 last year.

Kelly approached the victim and accused him of trying to flirt with his girlfriend.

He then punched him in the side of the head, knocking him to the ground, and striking him again before stealing a quantity of cash from his pocket and running away.

The victim managed to call the police and officers quickly located Kelly and arrested him on suspicion of robbery.

Kelly also admitted a charge of possession of an offensive weapon and a public order offence after he was arrested during an altercation with another man in Milton Road on February 2. Kelly was threatening the other man with a metal bed frame.

Investigating officer, DC Deborah Cummings, said: "Kelly was responsible for attacking a vulnerable man in an unprovoked and violent assault.

"The victim has been left traumatised and I welcome the news Kelly will serve time behind bars for his reprehensible actions."

Gravesend woman, Gemma Gurr, aged 24, of Hampton Crescent has denied robbery but admitted handling stolen goods relating to the same incident and is awaiting sentence.
