Eurotunnel customers are still facing delays after engineers battle to fix the power supply which caused a mass evacuation yesterday (July 7).

The failure caused the train to stop and then the company helped 382 people and four dogs evacuate the train, around 15km from London, under the Channel.

Passengers are still experiencing problems on the route with a number of Eurostar cancellations earlier this morning and general delays along the route although it is believed the problems should be resolved by lunchtime today.

A Eurotunnel spokesman said: “Part of the overhead power supply came down and was cut so the train was brought to a stop – we had to move the train and the people.

“It happened around 15 km from the UK towards France under the Channel and 382 people and 4 dogs were evacuated. There were no reported injuries.

“We moved passengers to the terminal in France and reunited with their vehicles. They’ve now headed off.

“We are sorting out the final bits of the repairs in the tunnel – once we’ve completed that we’ll do testing and open.

“Hoping to re-open around lunchtime today. We’ve just got one line open at the moment."

A Eurostar spokeswoman said: “Following the failure yesterday (7 July) of a Eurotunnel Shuttle train carrying passenger vehicles, the damage to the overhead power supply cables inside the Channel Tunnel is unresolved and ongoing.”
