A Thamesmead secondary school has been chosen as one of 32 schools across England to help lead national changes in maths teaching.

Woolwich Polytechnic Secondary School, in Hutchins Road, will form part of a national £11 million Maths Hub programme and aims to improve maths learning in Greenwich, Lewisham, Bexley, Bromley and Southwark.

The school for boys will work with Hawksmoor and Windrush Primary School, the University of Greenwich and others with expertise in improving maths learning.

The scheme also includes a research exchange between maths teachers in England and those in Shanghai, China.

Woolwich Poly’s co-headteachers Tim Plumb and Byron Parker said: “We are delighted that Woolwich Polytechnic has been chosen as a National Maths Hub. “This accolade is a result of the wonderful work of our dedicated staff and the amazing achievements of our students.

“We look forward to helping raise maths standards in other schools across the region.”

Deputy Leader of Greenwich Council and cabinet member for children’s services, Councillr John Fahy, added: “Congratulations to Woolwich Poly for being selected to help lead the new changes in maths teaching.

“Their involvement, along with Hawksmoor and Windrush, is testimony to the commitment of our schools to work for improved standards, not just for their own pupils but for the wider community of schools across Greenwich and in neighbouring boroughs.”

The Maths Hubs programme is coordinated centrally by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics.
