Woman killed in Abbey Wood hit-and-run
A woman in her 60s was killed by a hit-and-run driver in Abbey Wood this morning.
The incident happened in Finchale Road near the roundabout with Eynsham Drive at around 11am when the pedestrian was hit by a Ranger Rover.
Ambulance crews and an air ambulance attended but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the car fled on foot after mounting the pavement and smashing into the pedestrian along with some bollards and a road sign.
Another sad thing about the accident in Abbey Wood was seeing the police escort the husband home in his mobility scooter.— Dave (@Yankees2000) June 19, 2014
Graham Stone, 65, was trimming a tree in the grounds of the adjacent Weybourne care home 20 metres from the roundabout when he heard a loud screeching sound.
The maintenance man told News Shopper: “The Range Rover came away from the roundabout and ploughed into the bollards.
“I didn’t see anyone jump out of the car because I was looking at all the smoke coming out of the bonnet.
“Somebody shouted out ‘don’t let him get away’. It all happened so quickly.
“I didn’t realise somebody was underneath the vehicle.
“It must have been the person I saw walking on the pavement just a split second before the car came.”
The hit and run driver careered into the Finchale Road sign before killing a pedestrian.
A blue police tarpaulin covered the stretch of pavement where the victim was struck while the Range Rover’s hazard lights were still blinking.
Police established a wide cordon across streets surrounding the block of flats immediately by the crime scene.
A Met Police spokesman said: "The male driver of the car made off from the scene on foot and enquiries are underway to trace him.
"Officers from Greenwich attended the scene and the incident will be investigated by officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit."
No arrests have been made and enquiries continue.
