A small Greenwich restaurant specialising in quality pub grub is giving Gordon Ramsay a run for his money after being named one of London's best eateries on the Trip Advisor website.
The Green Pea peaked at number seven in the site's capital rankings last week - just one place below the three Michelin-starred Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in Chelsea.
And owner Tom O'Connor said that, alongside all his regulars, people have started turning up at the Trafalgar Road venue from all over the world in recent months.
He said: "We got a shock. I did anyway. I'm not a computer freak at all. I have a computer but I think the last time I had a look it was about a year ago.
"About seven or eight months ago some people started coming in saying 'we found you on Trip Advisor'. I didn't even know what Trip Advisor meant."
Mr O'Connor, who originally hails from Sligo in west Ireland, opened the Green Pea around seven years ago in a former student bar beside Hardy's pub. His restaurant has just three main staff and seats around 40 people.
He said: "I decided somebody's got to do something about improving the food in Greenwich. I decided to make a stand on doing fresh food and fresh veg."
The chef, who started cooking aged 14, went on: "Our customers are properly fed for the whole day. They won't need another meal for four or five hours afterwards. When they get my pie they say 'Oh my god, what the hell is this? We've never had this before.'
"You can sit and talk to your friends here, people aren't standing over you. It's relaxed. People talk to each other. It's a mad place really. But I'm mad. You have to be mad."
The pies and other dishes like fish and chips go for under £10 - compared to Ramsay's restaurant where prices rise to £95 for three courses- while Mr O'Connor says his mash, chips and gravy are among the very best in London
Mr O'Connor, who has lived in the area for 35 years, said: "We just do everything homemade. It's made fresh and its more for local people but we're grateful when we get the tourists because it's more business for Greenwich.
"I'm easy to work with but I'm also very meticulous about getting everything right. Because, one bad review, and we can say goodbye to this."
