Lewisham’s culinary scene is getting the east London treatment, as a disused market is transformed into a summer street food venue.

Thought up by the creators of Street Feast, Dalston’s popular diners’ yard, Model Market, international cuisine will be on offer from 10 venues every Friday and Saturday night, including Mama’s Jerk Station, Breddos Tacos, and Yum Bun.

Rotary Cocktail Bar and Rum Shack are amongst those that will be serving up drinks.

Dom Cools-Lartigue, founder of Street Feast, said: "South east London - like a lot of areas - deserves something a bit more interesting in terms of the food mix."

Work has been underway converting old hair salons, record shops and shipping agencies, with 90 per cent of the original building used. Wood salvaged from old units will be used to make the main bar, and a secret rooftop terrace is in the works.

Mr Cools-Lartigue said: "I guess it will be something akin to a smaller version of Brixton Village."

However, unlike Brixton’s market, Lewisham will have a big central bar area where people can congregate, to the sound of house and funk background music.

He added: "I hope it will bring something positive to what’s already great in Lewisham.

"Street food is quite a uniquely cross-generational event. At the end of the day, it’s food and drink. We all like to eat, we all like to have a drink, and whoever appreciates and enjoys good food and drink should enjoy Model Market."

Adrian Luckie, who runs Mama’s Jerk Station, grew up nearby. He told News Shopper: "Back in the day, we used to call it Lewisham Black Market, because that was where we could mainly find our products."

Setting up stall at Model Market has brought Mr Luckie full circle. He said: "When Dom showed me my unit, it was the actual place where I used to eat jerk chicken when I was a little kid."

For 15 weekends from June 20, hot food will be on offer from 6pm until late. For the first two weekends entry will be free - from then on it will cost £3 after 7pm.
