A former Bromley and Charlton goalkeeper, who was involved in a car crash almost two weeks ago, is making good progress and has been taken off a ventilator.

George Howard, from Rainham, was on holiday in South Africa when the accident happened on May 23.

Friends say the 20-year-old, who was left in a coma, is now breathing on his own without life-support.

George spent a season at Bromley after being released by Charlton in 2012, helping the team to London Cup victory over Kingstonian in May last year.

His friend Martin Di Fede has set up an online fundraising page to help George's family stay with him in South Africa, raising £12,699 so far.

On the page, Mr Di Fede said: "He still has a long way to go but this is great news and a big step forward.

"Thank you all for your continued support."

Meanwhile a star-studded benefit match will take place on Sunday (June 8), at Coldharbour Leisure Centre, Chapel Farm Road, Eltham, kicking off at 1.30pm.

It will feature, among others, Swansea's former Charlton midfielder Jonjo Shelvey.
