NEWS Shopper can exclusively reveal who Bromley's new police borough commander will be.

Chief Superintendent Charles Griggs is expected to be officially revealed later this week.

Mr Griggs replaces current borough commander Chief Superintendent Martin Greenslade, who has been in the role since January 2005.

Mr Griggs, the current head of the Met's traffic unit, expects start his new job on January 29.

The 46-year-old, who was Bromley's deputy borough commander up until December 2005, is promising to be "bold and brave" against crime and increase confidence in the force.

He said: "No matter what, it is people's perceptions that count, as long as people feel safe that's part of the battle.

"I want the people of Bromley to have confidence in their police force.

"What makes us different from the rest of society is we are given powers and we need to be bold and brave in how we use these powers and that will increase confidence.

"If people have trust in the police force they will engage with us and they will feel better."

Mr Griggs admits persistent issues in the borough include anti-social behaviour and other low-level nusiances but promises to tackle these, as well as serious crime.

He added: "These nuisances affect the quality of people's lives, they aggravate and irritate and are important to people's safety.

"Bromley is a borough which has really embraced safer neighbourhood teams in order to meet the needs of local communities but at the same time we have got to keep addressing serious crime.

"We have got to be relentless in catching criminals."

The father-of two added: "I'm truly honoured to be able to be at the heart of policing in Bromley.

"It is fantastic for me, I was born there, went to school there and grew up there and now I live there with my family.

"I feel privileged to come here and have an impact and improve the quality of life for the people of Bromley."
