A micro-budget south London film will get a nationwide release after competing with Hollywood blockbusters and Oscar contenders on a nine week run.
Common People – about Princess Parroty, who escapes her cage to fly with the parakeets in the skies of south London and soars into the lives of common people – will come to Greenwich Picturehouse on Tuesday, June 10.
The independently-distributed film was given one screening at the Picturehouse in Clapham in January which turned into a nine week stint to packed houses, such was its success.
As well as Greenwich, it will be shown at 16 other cinemas nationwide.
The film debuted at the Sedona International Film Festival in the US, where it won The Independent Spirit award. It went on to be nominated for Best Narrative Feature at the St Louis International Film Festival and win the Excellence award at The Rincon International Film Festival in Puerto Rico.
Picturehouse’s London Cinemas Co-ordinator Paul Ridd said: “ Picturehouse has always championed independent films so we’re incredibly proud to be a part of this success story. After the overwhelming response to the film at Clapham it seemed like a perfect fit for Discover Tuesdays.”
