A football fan from Charlton claims to be the “mystery paper airplane bandit” who hit a Peruvian player during England’s win at Wembley.
A YouTube video, viewed more than 3.7 million times, shows the moment a paper craft strikes Peru’s Hansell Riojas on the head to the roar of the crowd.
Blair Valentine claims to have launched the paper missile during the 82nd minute of the friendly at Wembley where England won 3-0 on Friday (May 30).
The 22-year-old, who lives in Elliscombe Road and went to the game with six friends, said: “We just wanted to go for the experience, it turned out to be a bit more than we bargained for.
“The plane went halfway down the stand, we were cheering it on.
“When it hit the player, the crowd went nuts.
“I think that was probably the coolest part of it.
“Unless you are down on the pitch playing, you never expect to be cheered like that by the Wembley crowd.
"People were turning around and applauding and a few were bowing.”
The business management student at Greenwich University says he joined fans making paper planes out of St George crosses which were handed to the crowd to hold up during the national anthem.
He said: “You learn the craft at school, but I never had a target that far away or hit with that kind of speed.
“I have had a few people question what I did but we were watching the game the whole way through and it was a bit of fun really.”
YouTube footage captures the plane’s flight from the top tier of the stadium on to the pitch to the delight of onlookers.
Mr Valentine took to Twitter to reveal himself as the paper plane ‘bandit’. He posted: “England vs Peru. I am the mystery paper airplane bandit #paperairplane #shotofalifetime”
He later uploaded photos of the moment the shot was fired, saying: “All this action around my paper airplane shot yesterday I'd forgotten how awestruck I was by wembley!”
