Thugs appear to have destroyed a swan's nest in Thamesmead and killed the mother bird.

News Shopper has received multiple reports of youngsters being seen throwing rocks at a mute swan's nest in Southmere Lake on Wednesday.

It appears the female adult swan was killed and the eggs destroyed in the alleged attack.

Chris Waite, who took this picture, posted on Facebook: "Just sickening, why throw rocks at swans eggs...no need for this at all, the mother swan is also dead...well done — at Southmere Lake."

A spokesman for the RSPCA said: "It is extremely sad and frustrating to hear a swan at Southmere Lake has allegedly been killed by someone or some people throwing rocks at it and the bird's nest.

"Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act it is an offence to take, injure or kill a swan. Punishment can include a fine of up to £5,000 and/or a prison sentence of up to six months."
