There is less than a month to go until hundreds of walkers embark on a magical night time charity walk through the striking urban landscapes of London and into the gorgeous countryside of Kent. DAN KEEL brings you another moving story explaining how the Nightline money will be spent.

While most of us spent Easter hunting for eggs and gorging on chocolate, Widehorizons staff were busy doing what they do best - running outdoor activities for the area’s youngsters.

The April bank holiday saw 43 kids, aged 11 to 15, challenged to a range of adventure tasks including high ropes, climbing, bushcraft and survival skills, and team assault courses.

The Get Out, Go Wild scheme is designed to develop key skills such as team-work, communication and decision-making while giving the youngsters, from Lewisham, Greenwich and Bexley, a chance to try out new activities. Widehorizons’ events manager Neil Munro said, "I was privileged to be able to spend an afternoon with the young people as they learned bushcraft skills, including building a fire and cooking bread over it.

"It was clear how much each young person had grown in confidence through the week and that none of them wanted to leave at the end of each day."

Children spent four days at Widehorizons Margaret McMillan House in Wrotham, and on the final day were involved with a conservation project at Widehorizons Woodlands Centre in Shooters Hill.

  • Currently, 80 per cent of people in the UK live in urban areas meaning many are becoming disengaged with the natural world around them.
  • Widehorizons offers day visits and residential courses to schools.

Additionally, they also offer an Outreach Programme where Widehorizons’ tutors bring adventure to schools, using even the smallest of outdoor spaces to help children learn.
