Kentish beer and local sausage rolls - Petts Wood's new micropub has opened its doors
After thirsty rumour and hungry speculation Petts Wood’s new micropub has finally opened its doors.
One Inn the Wood, in Petts Wood Road, saw curious wine lovers, ale fans, and sausage roll enthusiasts alike try out the premises over the weekend (May 23-26) as it began serving some of Kent’s much-loved food and drink.
Owner Barry Bridge, 47, has given up a job as a money broker to follow his dream and armed with beers, cheeses, and bowls of nuts said the first few days have been really positive.
He told News Shopper: “We had a great opening – I’m really happy.
“We were packed on Friday and Saturday, there’s been a lot of interest and a fair few people have been coming down.
“I think it’s we’ve had as close to 100 per cent positive feedback as we could’ve expected.
“A few of the ladies asked for cushions on seats, and we’ve been a bit quieter at lunchtime but it’s been pretty good.”
Mr Bridge exercises a ‘no mobile phone’ policy, won’t be showing the World Cup, and only serves produce and tipples from south-east London and Kent – with the exemption of red wine.
It’s all part of the ethos of a traditional ‘micropub’, many of which operate under the ‘kiss’ policy – ‘keep is simple, keep it small’.
He explained: “I want it to be a place in the community. I keep it simple – we’ve got chutneys from Proud Chillies over the road, and just have one or two wines. There's no standing at the bar.
“We want to be inclusive and be as welcoming as possible.”
The publican’s menu will change regularly. This week the likes of Simco, of Kent Brewery, and No.5, from Gadd’s, were on tap alongside permanent fixtures of wine and a bottled lager from nearby Chapel Down.
Mr Bridge also promised earlier this month “a few surprises” – including the possibility of live music from time-to-time.
