Celebrity bird expert David Lindo has unveiled a new bird viewing hide in Abbey Wood.

The two-storey octagonal unit was unveiled at Thames Water’s Crossness nature reserve in Belvedere Road, while red kites and a marsh harrier flew overhead.

David, known as the Urban Birder, has regularly discussed his specialist subject on The One Show and BBC Breakfast.

He said: "Crossness Nature Reserve is another shining example of how people can get close to nature.

"I hope the local community continue to love and cherish this site as well as learn more about the birds in their local area."

Crossness Nature Reserve manager Karen Sutton said: "The octagonal shape allows 360 degree views of the reserve, and having two floors means it’s big enough to accommodate groups such as school parties who can watch the birds from a sheltered facility."

The site was first classified as a nature reserve in 1998 and is home to a number of species.

The viewing platform was officially revealed on May 16.
