Crossrail has bagged the London Infrastructure Award for civil engineering excellence.
A ceremony run by the Institution of Civil Engineers saw the Crossrail team honoured at the institute’s headquarters on Thursday night.
Part of Crossrail's new rail line will see Whitechapel connect Canary Wharf, crossing the Thames, with a new station in Woolwich and connecting with the North Kent Line at Abbey Wood.
The judging panel, including the Deputy Mayor of London, Cllr Victoria Borwick AM, said: “Crossrail represents the greatest real infrastructure project London has seen in modern times.
“This was exemplified by three projects presented which characterised the civil engineering challenges of this programme.
“The tight logistics and substructure technology of delivering a station in central London - typified by Bond Street Station, sinking a complete mainline station into West India Dock at Canary Wharf and the preservation and utilisation of Victorian railway assets refurbishing and remanufacturing the Connaught Tunnel.
“All excellently executed projects that have fully embraced and demonstrated the Crossrail Programme values generating both training and career development for our future great Civil Engineers, and utilising the best innovation that our British supply chain can deliver.”
Crossrail also scooped the People’s Choice Award, which saw over 3,600 Londoners cast their vote for their favourite civil engineering project in the capital.
