Labour has tightened its grip on Greenwich, taking three seats off the Tories in the local elections, with Ukip appearing to take a bite out of the Conservative vote.

The highest profile casualty was Deputy Leader of Greenwich Conservatives Nigel Fletcher, as Labour gained two seats in Eltham North.

That ward had the highest turnout in the borough - 50.26 per cent - with Tory leader Spencer Drury finishing top on 1,975.

But Nigel Fletcher finished more than 100 votes behind Labour's Wynn Davies and Linda Bird. Tory Adam Thomas also lost his seat, not helped by UKIP taking 1,221 votes.

Afterwards, Nigel Fletcher tweeted: "Disappointed not to be re-elected, but proud and grateful to have had the chance to serve Eltham North for 9 years on the Council."

Elsewhere, Labour also took one seat from the Tories in Blackheath Westcombe with newcomer Cherry Parker, an outspoken critic of the old regime, coming out on top.

In much of the rest of the borough it was a clean sweep for Labour, with a surprising surge for the Greens putting them second in many wards.

And the Lib Dems' woes continued. They finished last in a host of wards, floundering behind UKIP and even the BNP.

Overall, Labour finished with 43 seats. The Tories were down to just eight.

Thamesmead Moorings was the ward with the lowest turnout in the borough with 29.6 per cent.

There was an overall turnout of 37.25 per cent for local elections in Greenwich.

The full results are on the council website. Counting for the European Parliamentary election is taking place on Sunday (May 25).
