An international charity hosted its anniversary running event at an Orpington school this week.

A marathon kicked off proceedings, held on Saturday May 17 at Green Street Green Primary School, before pupils competed in 2k and 4k races.

The ‘Orpington Marafun’ was the work of Footsteps International, an organisation that works to fight poverty in Kenya, Sierra Leone, and Burma.

Joel Berry, 9, said: “I thought it was an amazing day – I liked how the course was set out with the start and finish line. It was great having all the supporters standing around cheering us on.”

Seven year-old Benjy Meadows added: "It was hard to keep going for 10 laps but I'm glad I did it to get my medal".

And Luca Meadows, 8, remarked: “It was really good and it didn't matter if you were the fastest or not you just had to finish”.

As well as tests of endurance the day saw local MP Jo Johnson attend, along with a spring market, a bouncy castle, and ice cream aplenty.

And while raising money for Footsteps, Green Street Green also collected funds to put towards new facilities.

Headteacher David Abrahams said: “It was wonderful to see so many people from our community raising money for good causes.

“I take my hat off to all the runners”.
