A Bexley man is preparing to set off on a gruelling 100km walk to raise funds for EllenorLions Hospices in memory of his "inspirational" mum.

Adrian Jones, 38, of Woodlands Park, Joydens Wood will walk from London to Brighton on Saturday (May 24) in honour of mum Lorna Jones, who worked for the charity for 20 years and was later cared for by EllenorLions nurses after being diagnosed with incurable breast cancer.

Lorna received hospice at home support for 18 months and spent her final days at the EllenorLions Hospice in Coldharbour Road, Northfleet where she died peacefully aged 68, with Adrian and her husband Roger at her side in February.

Mr Jones will be taking part in the London to Brighton Challenge for a second time in a bid to raise much-needed funds for the hospice.

He said: "I took part last year and raised over £3,000 to give mum something to focus on whilst she was undergoing her chemotherapy treatment.

"I couldn’t help her physically, but wanted to give her something to look forward to.

"This year I will be walking in her memory and in honour of family friends Barbara and Christine who both received care and support from the hospice throughout their illnesses.

"During her short time in the hospice, we couldn’t have wished for more as they cared for her, as well as supporting the rest of the family through what was a sad time for us.

"As a family, we have supported the hospice for many years, but it is only now that we really appreciate the care and support they provide for those in need."

Lorna supported the charity by working as a clerical support for its nurses and in its coffee shop.

Since losing his mum, Adrian has walked over 400km in training and has been collecting sponsorship in a bid to raise £4000.

Mr Jones added: "I’m not looking forward to the long night stage and blisters, but I can’t wait for the camaraderie of the competitors and the feeling of accomplishment and achievement that lasts for a long time after the event.

"Last year I completed it in 23.5 hours and I hope this year I can complete it a little quicker."
