UPDATE: Business owners speak out against Bexley Council plans to close Manor Road, Erith for 10 weeks

Bexley Council will close Manor Road from June 16 for resurfacing work. 

During this period it will be blocked off to through traffic.

Peter Benson is the director of Worldwide Pallet Logistics Limited in Manor Road.

He said: "We run 45ft double decker trailers, 18 tonners and 7.5 tonners and we have not been notified.

"How on earth are they going to get through the width barriers?

"They cannot close the whole road."

Mr Benson contacted the council after seeing news of the road closure on News Shopper's website and arranged to meet with council representatives May 20.

He added: "They should have told us weeks ago.

"It is going to cause chaos. It's going to be horrendous."

Manor Road traffic will be diverted in and out via Bridge Road and Northend Road.
The 99 and N99 buses will also be diverted.

A Bexley Council spokesman said: "The foundations of Manor Road are failing and urgently need to be replaced.

"The council has allocated significant funding to carry out these repairs which has been planned to take advantage of the school summer holidays.

"If we do not carry out this work, the road could fail resulting in severe long-term consequences for local people and businesses.

"At the same time a Local Safety Scheme, funded by Transport for London, will be introduced.

"The scheme will enhance the existing pedestrian crossing and provide two new crossings, one for pedestrians and one for cyclists. The 20mph zone will be extended to reduce traffic speeds.

"We will be writing to local residents and visiting local businesses to tell them about the diversions that will be needed during the works, including those affecting buses, in the next few weeks."
