New research shows more selfies are taken in London than anywhere else on the planet.

Selfies - the act of taking a self-portrait photo of yourself and sharing it on social media - appears to be a trend that is here to stay.

A survey by Suggestme.com researched the most popular places to take a selfie by analysing 6.3 million social media messages from Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, among others.

Unsurprisingly, London is the most popular city in which to take a selfie, with big sights including Big Ben, the London Eye, and Buckingham Palace being the most popular selfie hotspots.

New York and Amsterdam are in second and third place respectively, with Times Square, the Statue of Liberty, the Rijksmuseum, and the Van Gogh Museum being the spots where the most selfies are taken.

In Amsterdam, many selfies are taken by famous paintings, the most popular being the Sunflowers by Van Gogh (1853).

Van Gogh is interestingly often considered by many to be the pioneer of the selfie.

Barcelona, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Sydney, Istanbul, and Athens are the cities that complete the top 10.

In the Louvre there is a statue that is an immensely popular selfie spot, due to the fact it looks like the statue itself is taking a selfie.

In Australia, koala bears are often observed taking part in the selfie phenomenon.

Staff at the Wild Life Sydney Zoo have installed a special camera in their enclosure.

They have observed the koalas taking their own selfies, and as is to be predicted, have had some hilarious results.
