A huge fire in Erith caused a plume of smoke which could be seen for miles.
More than 70 firefigters tackled the blaze in Dayton Drive from 6.37pm yesterday to 2.47am this morning.
The London Fire Brigade says a large amount of scrap and tyres caught fire yesterday but that there were no injuries.
Twitter user @n_s_martin, aged 25, had just left work in Church Manor Way when he saw the fire.
The Sidcup resident told News Shopper: "You could see all the smoke for miles.
"I walked all the way around so that I could get as close as possible and the fire just got bigger and bigger.
"Fire engines were pulling up right up until 9pm.
"There were five or six explosions. I could feel them as well as see and hear them. That must have been the cylinders on site going up."
Ten fire engines from Orpington, Biggin Hill, Plumstead, Erith, Bexley, Bromley, Greenwich and Beckenham fire stations were at the scene and spent much of this time making safe a number of gas cylinders which could have exploded.
Crews are still at the scene damping down small fires.
News Shopper readers as far away as Greenwich (seven miles) and Dartford (3.5 miles) reported seeing thick black smoke.
