Cyclists and roller-skaters should be allowed to ride through Greenwich and Woolwich foot tunnels, according to the results of an informal survey.

The study was launched by Friends of Greenwich and Woolwich Foot Tunnels (Fogwoft) to see public opinion on the best use of the tunnels, which 3,000 people pass through each day.

56 per cent of voters felt there should be 24-hour considerate, shared use of the tunnels, while 35 per cent were in favour of keeping the current unenforced bylaw banning riding through the tunnels.

Another nine per cent voted in favour of overnight shared use between 10pm and 8am to protect vulnerable users.

Improved signage to guide tunnel behaviour was also backed by 34 per cent of voters, while 22 per cent called for police action to enforce the bylaw and 21 per cent asked for CCTV in the tunnels.

A Fogwoft spokesman says the number of votes cast was “depressingly small” and would follow up the opinion poll with recommendations to Greenwich Council.

He said: “Going by the results of the survey, the public would like to see the tunnel cycling ban rescinded.

“However, in our view the tunnels are not suitable for shared use, at least during the daytime when there are large numbers of pedestrians moving through them, including small children and disabled people.

“The Greenwich foot tunnel is simply too narrow to shared use.

“When it comes to off-peak cycling in the tunnels, Fogwoft is more sympathetic, and not least toward lone women and other vulnerable individuals who have understandable concerns as to their personal safety.”
