Bexley is gearing up for its first council election since 2010 after four years with a massive Conservative majority.

The Tories have governed with 52 councillors to Labour’s 11, with the opposition’s strength concentrated in the north of the borough.

The rest of Bexley has remained true Tory blue and council leader Councillor Teresa O’Neill wants to keep it that way.

She told News Shopper: "We are hoping for a complete whiteout win, taking every seat in the borough.

“Freezing council tax and the inward investment that’s gone into Bexley are things we’ve done that have resonated with people.

“We are not making anything up – what we are saying is what we are doing. “We have shown we are capable, we have shown we are trustworthy and we want to carry on.”

Last time out the Tories recorded another strong showing, losing only two seats from their total in 2006, when they swept back into power after four years of Labour rule.

Among nine Conservative councillors standing down at this election deputy leader Coun Colin Campbell and cabinet member for children’s services Coun Katie Perrior.

Labour are confident they can retain their seats in Thamesmead East, Belvedere, Erith and North End and make inroads further south.

Current Belvedere councillor and candidate Sean Newman said: "We want to take control of the council, which we did in 2002.

"We are hoping to take most of the seats north of the A2 and we have got a really good campaign being fought in Barnehurst, Longlands and Cray Meadows.

"The Tories aren’t going to get any of the protest votes they got in 2006 and 2010 so they will end up relying on their core vote which isn’t coming out for them."

Labour leader Chris Ball is standing down, along with Erith councillor Margaret O’Neill and Thamesmead East representatives Sandra Nauer and Harry Persaud.

The council is currently in the process of vacating the Civic Offices in Bexleyheath and moving just down the road to the Woolwich Building.

With both main parties fielding the full three candidates in Bexley’s 21 wards, the best hope of breaking their stranglehold appears to be UKIP.

They are fielding 19 candidates, including a full three in Barnehurst and two in East Wickham.

The party will also be hoping to do well in the elections to the European Parliament taking place the same day as the local elections on May 22.

Eight members from the London region will be returned to Strasbourg, with UKIP fielding a full eight candidates. If you are not already registered to vote you will now not be able to do so, unless you are applying for someone else to vote for you.

In that case the application must reach returning officer Will Tuckley at the Bexleyheath Civic Offices by 5pm on Wednesday (May 14).

If you are registered you should have received a poll card telling you where and when you can vote on May 22.

In the local elections voters can vote for up to three candidates in their ward and a full list of polling stations is available at bexley.gov.uk

The website the Tories in Bexley tried to ban!. By using their police friends, however unsuccessful!. These Tories will do anything to stay in power.

Bexley Council now control the police!.

It's time to remove Teresa O'Neill and her tribe. Remember that on 22 May, or we will pay the price on the 23 May.

Time to go Tories from Bexley Borough, you have done much harm!.

Well the Tory council have already eliminated the Labour postal-vote block as the postal vote ballots haven't even been sent out yet...

By the time they get sent out 2nd class it'll be too late for some people to return them.

Well done to the Bonkers Team for their election leaflet - well basically a summary of £35m of cuts over the last few year. Added to that the price hikes in parking, in the cost of being dead and you can see why Council Tax has been frozen for 4 years.

Why dont the Tories say what they have done, particularly driving down Children's Services and placing vulnerable people at risk. They may have got better recently but it should not happen in the first place.

Do you want to pay the same again for the next 4 years for even less.... that is the question.

These politicians are bankrupt of any good ideas to help ordinary Joe Public and Mavis Resident....

Everyone I have spoke to has had enough of them and the bloody awful tax record in the borough! Knocked on me door and asked me if I was going to be voting for them again - shook me UKIP local election leaflet at them I'd received just a few days before and told them to be on there way!

I want change in Bexley so I'm voting UKIP! Can't be any worse than the others can they?

I don't know what they have to be proud of. They are unrecognisable from the local or national party I have spent most of my adult life supporting. The conservative leaflet in the longlands ward talks of the success of Bexley schools. What a shame that a party with such a stronghold in my ward and Bexley borough has to field candidates who live in Bromley. Who would have thought such a conservative stronghold would give half of the grammar school allocations to other boroughs at the expense of our children's places. Cuts and fines have been the reason for council tax freezes. Vote in a UKIP councillor and have someone who will speak on your behalf and open up the council to real transparency for the people of Bexley.

In fact hold on - all but 2 of their pledges will mean money has to be found and spent. Unless Saint Nigel has a magic money tree can they explain where they will find it? I loved the one about non bexley school children going to bexley schools. My neighbor says that manifesto promise they have made is impossible and illegal.

Well it also says that the bloody council have 60+ million in the bank which has jumped in the last few years! I'm pretty sure more than two are not spending out:

- Scrapping councillors saves £300,000 per year.
- Bringing nursing in house will save £££s. Are you aware that the council pay out MORE money per nurse to the companies that run it on behalf of the borough than they actually pay the nurses? Its nearly 4 times as more!
- Lowering the wages of those being paid over £100,000...

Shall I continue?

I'm sure you know that it's not illegal - and they say it's UKIP who scaremonger!!

I'm sure you know that schools can decide the boundaries to which they accept pupils, as can doctor surgeries and so on...

Actually it is illegal under something I am reliably told is called the Greenwich Judgement. But surely the wonderful UKIP checked it all out before they put together their bucket list of spending. Or are they hoping nobody looks at the detail. Its is illegal to prevent a child within a schools catchment area to attend based on boundaries like borough limits. Ask a headteacher.
