'Get your house in order' - Greenwich Council and BBC warned over Freedom of Information response times

News Shopper: 'Get your house in order' - Greenwich Council and BBC warned over Freedom of Information response times 'Get your house in order' - Greenwich Council and BBC warned over Freedom of Information response times

Greenwich Council have been told to "get their house in order" over repeated failures to respond to freedom of information (FOI) requests within statutory deadlines.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) will now monitor the council - along with the BBC and Essex Police - over their timeliness in dealing with requests.

It revealed there had been 15 complaints to the office over the council's response times.

The ICO will now examine the timeliness of the three organisations’ responses to requests received between May 1 and July 31.

Failure to show signs of improvement could result in enforcement action.

Deputy Commissioner and Director of Freedom of Information, Graham Smith, said: "We expect the BBC, along with Essex Police and Greenwich Council, to use the monitoring period to tackle these delays and get their house in order."

In 2011 News Shopper discovered that, since the Freedom of Information Act came into force in 2005, Greenwich Council failed to respond to 39 per cent of the FOI queries it received within the statutory 20 working day requirement.

a friend of mine has put in a FOI request and has received a letter explaining that they have a backlog and that they are unable to give any idea of when they will receive it! their child was injured in a school and feels the authorities did not adequately deal with this and wants answers. disgusting.

FOI requests are really difficult for Greenwich Council to deal with. Firstly they have to make up some lies which are plausible, then certain politicians will review the response if it is in any way sensitive and then finally a senior member of staff will then add a few more lies and then send the reply.

All that lying and political sculpting takes time.

Maybe if Greenwich was a little more honest and open about what it does and how it does it, then the number of FOI requests would decrease? Mind you, how often does Greenwich Council and the truth go and in hand?

What do Greenwich, BBC and North Korea have in common? They are ideologically blinkered, secretive, and they take people for fools.
