In England today there are more than 68,000 children and young people in care. Of these, foster parents look after around 75 per cent.

A recent study has highlighted many common misconceptions surrounding foster care, which could prevent those who might be interested in becoming foster parents making that first move.

We want to let you know the facts.

• A staggering 33 per cent of people were under the impression that if you are gay you are unable to foster. This is not true. Enquiries are welcomed from those who are gay, bisexual, straight and those who are single or in a relationship. In fact, diversity is a crucial element of fostering. It is important for each carer to have their own experiences and skills, in order the right match can be made with a young person in need of care.

• A further 15 per cent were under the impression that a single man cannot become a foster carer. This is also untrue. Single carers (male or female) have invaluable skills that can be applied to fostering.

• Age was a common theme with 54 per cent of people believing that those over 55 would not be approved as carers. There is no specific upper age limit; in fact, life experience can be incredibly valuable for fostering. However, it needs to be right for you, your health and your lifestyle.

• One in three people were convinced that if you lived in rented accommodation you would not be able to foster. This is definitely not true. You will simply need to have a secure tenancy agreement in place and have no plans to move. Providing you have a spare bedroom, it does not matter if you are a homeowner or a tenant.

Fostering can be challenging, but also incredibly rewarding and fun. Every carer is unique and can make a real difference to the chances that a young person has in life.
