Thirty-five firefighters were called to a fire at a block of maisonettes in Woolwich this morning.

Six fire engines were needed to put out the blaze in Connaught Road at around 10.30am.

A maisonette on the fourth and fifth floors was badly damaged by the blaze. A woman escaped the property before the brigade arrived and there were no reports of any injuries.

Fire engines from Plumstead, Greenwich, Lee Green, Eltham and East Greenwich fire stations attended the scene.

The cause of the fire, which was brought under control by 12.15pm, is under investigation.

I was one of the first people to arrive to help this poor lady we could hear her screams for help from out garden just next to the estate, these flats are nearly all empty and nobody was coming to her aid, instead lots of people who still lived here were mostly just coming onto the stair wells and were just watching, or filming instead of helping, I stood with the woman for some time, she was very distraught and was telling me she had lost her partner her Mum and her sister in the last few years and was packing to move out in the next few weeks, I believe she has been left with absolutely nothing, this estate needs to be emptied out as soon as possible,it is falling to bits and its unsafe and a nightmare fore the fire services to

It couldn't have been that bad, only 35 fire fairies and 6 engines.

If the so called Mayor of London and his likely cohort the chairman of London Fire Brigade had not closed all the fire stations we would of seen a quicker response time and the crews not having to travel so far! it was quickly that the fire happened when the fire fighters were not on strike.

It is time that Londoners tell the mayor who is totally unfit for any purpose to resign Boris needs to extract his head from where the sun don't shine and understand that the average Londoner as had enough of his mis- management of the city!
