Greenwich Council's deputy leader has been parachuted into the vacant Labour candidacy left by his boss.

Local authority leader Councillor Chris Roberts - who had been due to stand again for the ultra-safe Labour seats in Plumstead's Glyndon ward - announced earlier this month that he would not be contesting next month's elections.

Cllr Roberts had endured a string of claims about his conduct in the run-up to his announcement and his decision meant there was a spare Labour candidacy in Glyndon up for grabs.

Now his deputy Councillor Peter Brooks has been selected as his replacement, just months after failing to secure a candidacy in his current Thamesmead ward, the area where he lives.
