A suspected vigilante incident in Swanley is being investigated by police following the release of a notorious murderer from prison.

Minor damage was caused to the front door of a private family home in the town at around 9 pm on Friday night.

Police believe the incident is related to recent reports about the release of Alan Houchin from prison.

This is despite the fact police say Houchin is not currently living in the Swanley area and has conditions to live in a different part of the county.

Chief Inspector Mark Hutcheon said: “I can understand that this situation has raised some people’s concerns and community police officers and PCSOs are in the area today to provide reassurance.

“The officers will be available to talk to any local people who might have concerns, so please do feel free to approach them.

“I would also warn that we will not tolerate any act that causes fear, intimidation or harassment or appears to be targeted at any private homes, and will take action against anyone who does so.”

Houchin, 75, was jailed in 1965 for strangling teenage waitress Shona Berry in Margate.

After being released on licence 11 years later, he was again jailed for life in 1979 for the rape of a 19-year-old shop assistant.
