An elderly woman had to be cut free from her car this afternoon (March 27) after colliding with a hospital-bound bus.

The 80-year-old was taken to Princess Royal University Hospital (PRU), where the bus was heading to, with a broken arm and cuts and bruises.

London Ambulance Service (LAS) was called to the accident, on Crofton Road, just after 1.30pm.

The bus driver, 61, was also taken to hospital to receive treatment for a shoulder injury.

A police sergeant at the scene said: "The bus (R3 service) was travelling towards the hospital and the elderly lady was going towards Orpington.

"Her (woman) roof had to be cut off due to her age - there were fears of internal bleeding but her injuries are not life-threatening."

Resident Trevor Steatham, 64, saw some of the crash debris fly into his front drive - adding he and his wife heard "almighty bang".

He told News Shopper: "I heard a massive crash and almighty bang - my wife was in the greenhouse and heard it too.

"The car must have spun. I came out to see what had happened and luckily an ambulance was passing.

"It (the car) looks pretty bad. It's amazing that she's not in a worse condition because her car is so smashed up."

Following the incident traffic was delayed moving both directions, with bus routes 63, 336, 353, R2 and R3 all diverted as of around 4pm.

A police spokesman has said today (March 28) that both casualties have since been released.
