A Bexleyheath woman organised an event to celebrate the Indian Festival of Holi which was so successful it left the participants "unrecognisable" after 15 minutes.

Mother-of-two Savithri Bhat only started planning the Hindu celebration a few weeks ago but after flyering the local area, a crowd of around 75 turned up at the Danson Youth Centre on March 22.

Ms Bhat was delighted by the positive response to the Indian festival of colour event.

The 37-year-old said: "It went so well people were asking about holding it next year and I think I’ll have to find a sports pitch to fit all the people in.

"The children loved it, they couldn’t wait to get their parents covered in paint.

"Everyone was covered within around 15 minutes - people were unrecognisable.

"We had to do a lot of shampoo after and do quite a bit of laundry."

The Brampton Road resident wanted to organise it so her kids could get an insight into other religious festivals.

She said: "They get very excited about Easter and Christmas and I thought it would be good to help them learn about their culture.

"I think it's the first time we've ever had this festival in Bexleyheath."

An Asian women’s group is being held at the centre on the first and third Tuesdays of the month from 1pm to 3pm. Call 020 8303 6052.
