New Woolwich leisure centre to be built at Wilkinson site
A Woolwich leisure centre will be closed and replaced with a bigger one, under proposals endorsed by Greenwich Council.
Under the plans, the Waterfront centre will shut and be replaced by a more central facility on the site currently occupied by Wilkinson, which will relocate elsewhere in Woolwich.
It is set to have the same facilities with the bonus of new cafes and play areas.
Approved by the council's cabinet, the new centre is part of a plan to help regenerate Woolwich and draw more people into the town centre.
Cabinet member for culture and creative industries Councillor Peter Kotz said: "The current Waterfont Centre is enjoyed by nearly a million customers a year but its current location on the fringe of the town centre and across a very busy road is far from ideal.
"Bringing those people into the heart of the Woolwich instead and into a brilliant brand new building makes sense for the customers and makes sense for the town as a whole"
Feasibility studies and a consultation will be carried out at a later date.
