A Sydenham pub which was in danger of being turned into a Sainsbury's has had a stay of execution.
Locals had rallied round The Windmill, successfully getting it listed as an Asset of Community Value, and seeking legal advice on how to keep it as a pub.
They are also trying to get the support of local MP Jim Dowd for their campaign.
And a Lewisham Council licensing committee has now postponed a decision on the boozer's future.
Ward councillor Coun Liam Curran, who helped organise the campaign, questioned why the supermarket chain needed a new shop when it could already build one at The Greyhound.
That pub is due to be rebuilt along with flats and a supermarket - but progress on the project has stalled.
And he said: "We're delighted we've won this stage of the battle. It's an important asset to the local community."
