Irish or not, chances are you're celebrating St Patrick’s Day today (March 17), or at least had a pint of Guinness over the weekend.

Many of us have some connection to the Emerald Isle or perhaps know someone who does - failing that, any excuse to have a party is a popular pursuit.

The Irish population here is notable and as a result there are plenty of pubs spread across the capital set for a good ‘craic’.

O’Neill’s pubs celebrated in style this week with its bars in south-east London all booking dancers, live music and raising money for charities.

Cathal Maguire, 28, assistant manager at Bromley’s haunt, hails originally from the Dublin area and said last week there was lots planned.

He told News Shopper: "We’re doing charity fundraising for Bromley Y and the Wooden Spoon Society - we’re rowing the length of Liverpool to Ireland.

"I’m really looking forward to it, it’s always a great day and means a lot."

Beckenham and Blackheath O’Neill’s also got involved in the clover-leaved celebrations, offering cheaper pints of the black stuff at certain times as well as other treats.

Blackheath duty manager Phil Rogers was busy preparing for a big blow out: "It’s going to be absolutely manic and busy. We’re open late and got loads going on."

Meanwhile, just down the road in Beckenham, 43-year-old Delia Webb, manager of Beckenham’s branch, said she always makes the time "special".

She told News Shopper: "I come from Newmarket-on-Fergus in County Clare.

"It’s always nice to get together to think of home.

"It means a lot - more than Christmas or New Year."

John O’Connor, originally from Limerick, works at the Blythe Hill Tavern and was also set for a big weekend.

He said there were "big celebrations" planned at the Catford pub, adding he was excited about the entertainment.

The Dog & Bell in Deptford also has Irish owners, Charlie and Eileen Gallagher.

Dave Butcher, running the establishment until today, mentioned "it’s always a fun day" and was looking forward to having a few.
