Oh for goodness sake ... look, it's a popular place which many hundreds of people use or at least walk past every day. It's suddenly - and currently inexplicably - shut, which will be of interest to a lot of people who live in Petts Wood or who pass through the train station. So, yes, it's news. And, no, the fact it's in Petts Wood has nothing to do with the question of whether it's news or not.

I'm a regular customer there and I, for one, was surprised at the sudden closure! They serve the best cup of tea this side of Orpington and I miss my daily chats with the regulars before I go off egg-hurling. I await, anxiously, their re-opening!

If you live there and you use it - you already know this.
If you live elsewhere - you don't need to know this.

News is only news when there is background content.

If someone said to you "I have just seen an incident"

You would ask for more information - probably some or all of the famous 5 W's of journalism:
Who
What
Why
Where
When

As for the news hopper - they hop away from the W's and say things like:

London Fire Brigade were called to a house at 11:33pm No further details are available.

This story is essentially:
"Local cafe closes unexpectedly and regulars are informed"

- not exactly "man bites dog" is it ?

Not being funny but it could be because of a bereavement in the family, something they may not want to put on a note on the front of the store. Its closed, so what, its not the end of the world.

As the legal representative the owner of the Petts Wood Cafe I would like to post the following statement from the proprietor.

"We apologise for the sudden closure of our property. It became necessary, at short notice, to take time out following information received and I'm sorry for any inconvenience to our clients.
I will reward you all when we open again at the end of the month.
The rumours that we have remodelled the cafe and included VIP booths, private rooms and are hiring DJ's at the weekend are categorically untrue"

I hope this helps to clarify the situation.

So if I phone NewsShopper to report that my Café downstairs at work has just closed down, will you run an article on it?

This article is nothing more than an advert for the cafe. A bit of free advertising for a cafe very near the newsshopper office in the spirit of supporting local businesses. I'm sure no expectation of any kind of reward will have crossed the reporter's mind ;-)

My thanks to M Viduka for the update. I will eagerly await the re-opening and, I'm sure that many locals will be the same.
I hadn't heard the rumours regarding a modernisation. I hope this doesn't mean a price increase.

But shops & cafés (and pubs) close every week, hardly any rate a comment

You say "popular place" - no doubt with NS staff

PaulErith, do you mean Grahams? A great friend of mine, Graham funnily enough, owned it for many years. In fact, his father had a similar premises in the village itself many years ago till it burned down in a tragic accident.
Graham, sadly, has moved on from his establishment following an unsavoury incident in the shop last October involving an irate commuter and some candles. Hopefully someone else takes over... this are is losing hot drink establishments at an alarming rate!
