A Bromley man has been jailed after raiding golf clubs across the country and stealing more than £750,000.

Daniel Lloyd, 43, of the Holwood Estate in Keston, worked with 26-year-old Joe McCaughey, from New Addiscombe to carry out dozens of thefts in 17 counties.

The pair were found guilty of conspiracy to burgle following a three-week trial at Birmingham Crown Court with Lloyd being given a five-year sentence and McCaughey sent down for three years.

The National Crime Agency (NCA) reported a raid on Lloyd’s £800,000 home which saw officers uncover evidence of numerous burglaries. These crimes funded a lavish lifestyle of Bentleys and Land Rovers.

The NCA added Lloyd had claimed to be a businessman involved in property and car deals.

The agency’s head of regional investigations Steve Baldwin said: “These men were professional burglars who tried to mask their identities by avoiding CCTV cameras, changing their clothes to enter the same clubs over and over again, and using false number plates on their vehicles.

“When we discovered they were the wanted men from the appeal, the NCA worked with police forces and golf clubs across the country to gather evidence.

“We proved they had stolen equipment from hundreds of golfers, which they disposed of here and overseas. Our focus is now the financial side of the investigation and stripping them of their assets.”

In 2010, Lloyd and McCoughey were featured on Crimewatch after the men were thought to have struck high-end clubhouses 60 times by posing as golfers and “brazenly raiding lockers”.

They were later arrested following an investigation into a friend of Lloyd’s, a corrupt lawyer who was jailed for perverting the court of justice, the NCA explained.

Although only convicted of 36 thefts, police note they could have struck more than 1,000 times, stealing over £750,000 worth of equipment including shoes, clothing and other items.
