The derelict site of a former pub in Abbey Wood has now been covered up – but some residents still aren’t happy.

The patch of waste ground in Abbey Road has now been wrapped in green tarpaulin in a makeshift attempt to turn it into less of an eyesore.

Nearby New Road resident Veronica Keene, 66, has complained to the council the site needs proper hoardings around it while a developer is found.

The mother-of-one told News Shopper: "What they’ve done is appalling.

"It’s just plastic sheeting around the old metal fencing and they are just fobbing us off really.

"The council has a duty not to leave an eyesore."

Bexley Council has the power under the Town and Country Planning Act to erect proper wooden hoardings and bill the site agents afterwards.

But prospective Lesnes Abbey Wood Conservative councillor Kerry Allon says the authority may not be able to get its money back.

He said: "It would be a lengthy legal process and there is no guarantee we would win it.

"That would be taxpayer’s money and that is not right.

"As much as it pains me to say it I can’t see we are going to get anything better for the time being."

Councillor Allon added he is hoping a planning application will be submitted for the site soon.
