Plumstead weightlifters are flexing their muscles and questioning the "Olympic legacy" in Greenwich after their gym was closed for two months.
The gym facilities at Plumstead’s Warehouse Sports and Performing Arts Centre were shut after a leak in the roof and only partially reopened last week with full repairs not expected until the summer.
Gym users have slammed the delay in repairing the roof and the water damage caused by not using tarpaulin to cover the hole.
Alison Miller, who regularly uses the gym in Speranza Street, said: "The weightlifters are very cross actually. This is just ridiculous.
"There was this leak, and it was left to the elements for two months.
"I find it hard to understand why they can’t repair the roof."
The MA student of creative writing at Kingston University, who lives in Orissa Road, added: "We are the Olympic borough, if this is the Olympic legacy…"
The facility partially reopened after members threw their weight behind a new group Friends of Plumstead Warehouse Sports Centre calling for improvements including advertising on the website the yoga, martial arts and indoor bowling run at the centre.
Ms Miller went on to say she did not understand why a simple leak could not be patched up when the nearby Waterfront Leisure Centre in Woolwich was recently treated to an £800,000 revamp.
She said: "The Plumstead centre should be put in line with the rest of the borough.
"The staff themselves are all really nice, but the concern is that this looks like managed decline."
She says frustration at the gym closure came on top of the centre being closed for three weeks over the Christmas period.
A spokeswoman for GLL, which runs the leisure centre, said: "A number of patch repairs to the gym roof at the Warehouse Sports and Performing Arts Centre have been undertaken over recent months and the gym area reopened on February 24.
"Along with many other buildings in the UK, repairs have been hampered by the extremely wet and windy weather conditions experienced this winter.
"We are continuining to investigate the problem and are working to ascertain the best long-term solution."
