A fundraising event in memory of Bexleyheath girl Sarah Bennett who died aged just 22 of a rare and undetected heart defect has raised £840 for the Cardiac Risk in the Young charity.

Sarah, who attended Bexleyheath School and later Erith School passed away very suddenly in December 2009 and she suffered from a rare condition now recognised as Bland White Garland syndrome.

Sarah's friends Vicky Rowland and Gemma Brice, 24, from Dartford, are preparing to jump 10,000feet out of a plane for the charity on July 19 in Maidstone.

The brave pair held the evening of fun which included chest waxing, a raffle, a sweepstake and guessing how many sweets were in the jar at the Royal Standard pub, in Lion Road, Bexleyheath on Friday.

Vicky, 31, of Broadway, Bexleyheath said: "The whole evening went so well, it was quite literally packed to the rafters.

"All of the events ran smoothly and we found that people who won the prizes were giving them back so we could raise more money.

"The atmosphere was amazing. Everybody dug very deep in to their pockets and even those who didn't know Sarah were happy to give to such a good cause.

"It was very emotional in places and there were of course a few tears but the overall atmosphere was really buzzing, especially when Sarah's brother and cousin decided to volunteer to have their chests waxed."

The duo now anticipate to raise £5000 for the charity by July and plan to hold a talent show next month.
