AN ANIMAL rescue centre near Orpington is fit to burst after seeing an increasing number of animals left without a home.

Owner of Crockenhill’s Second Chance Animal Rescue (SCAR), John Ranger, said he and his team have been inundated with horses, pigs, cats, dogs and others over the last four or five months.

The 37-year-old feels the current economic situation is pushing more and more people to have to give up their companions as they simply can’t afford to keep them.

As a result he says every day there are animals brought in or abandoned on the doorstep and the site, which he mentioned is very small, is now completely full.

He explained: “They’re coming in really quickly – people just can’t afford to feed them.

“We’re just so busy. It’s taking its toll on us. We’ve got about 300 animals now and the financial situation is making it hard.

“We’re struggling. Lots of animals have been dumped – every morning we find more.”

Mr Ranger said SCAR’s re-homing as many as possible, while also paying for numerous vet bills and food costs. But he feels the situation may be unsustainable.

He said: “We’re full now – we’ve got animals everywhere.

“We’re doing all we can but we’re going to carry on and try to find new homes for as many as possible.”

Last year Mr Ranger said the centre, a non-profit charity run entirely by volunteers, found 2,000 new homes for animals and he admitted this year there’s even more work to be done.

The organisation carries out regular fundraising to keep the centre going, with running costs of over £20,000 in 2013.
