LEWISHAM residents are encouraged to go bananas about ending poverty and buy only Fairtrade bunches of the yellow fruit.
The campaign to give banana farmers and workers a fair wage is part of Fairtrade fortnight from February 24 to March 9 and is supported by Lewisham Council.
Events include a Fairtrade supper at the Catford Canteen on March 4 from 7pm to 11pm, a talk at Goldsmith’s University on March 6 by a Columbian banana farmer, and Fairtrade refreshments and speakers at the Horniman Museum on March 8.
The Mayor of Lewisham, which has been a Fairtrade borough for around 10 years, Sir Steve Bullock, said: “Everyone can do their bit whether it’s taking part in a Fairtrade event - or making a conscious decision to buy Fairtrade bananas and other Fairtrade products.
“The important thing to remember is that we continue to spread the Fairtrade message and to campaign for workers in developing countries to get a fairer deal for their hard work.”
