A BEXLEYHEATH school has completed a two-day screening programme in tribute to its student, Philip Lamin, who tragically died last year.
The event was organised with charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) to investigate if students and staff at the facility in Woolwich Road had any cardiac abnormality which they should be treated for.
Bexleyheath Academy schoolboy, Philip, 16, collapsed during a friendly game of after-school football at Goals in Graham Road on February 5 last year just after scoring a goal.
Head of Year 7 Tracey Boswell said "It’s hard to believe that a young person who appears fit and healthy, like Philip, might be at risk from a heart problem.
"We are extremely pleased with how well the screening programme has gone."
Professor Sanjay Sharma, a leading expert on inherited cardiac conditions and his team of qualified cardiac physiologists screened 163 students and staff who all received an Electrocardiogram (ECG).
From this initial test, five youngsters were then sent for a further examination: three of which were given the all clear and two have been referred on to a hospital for further investigation.
Professor Sanjay said: "The fact two young people need further investigation has made the whole programme so worthwhile."
