LONDON mayor Boris Johnson was in Bromley yesterday (February 11) visiting the borough's Youth Offending Service and Orpington's Hillside Primary School.

The mayor learned about how Bromley supports young people in danger of coming into contact with the criminal justice system at the Youth Offending Service in Masons Hill.

He saw examples of projects such as a bicycle repair and maintenance workshop that sees unclaimed stolen cycles returned to road worthiness and passed on to victims of bike crime.

Mr Johnson also showed interest in a card manufacture workshop that sees proceeds from the cards going to the charity Victim Support.

Meanwhile, at Hillside Primary School in Dyke Drive, he witnessed the borough's Junior Citizen event, which the school was hosting for all local children aged 10 to 12.

The event educates children about a number of everyday life 'scenarios' they may come across when moving onto secondary school. 

Among the advice on offer, they were shown how to protect belongings by Bromley police, basic first aid by the Red Cross and safety around animals by Battersea Dogs' Home.

The mayor said: "Bromley is doing some excellent work to make the borough safer and, in particular, to steer young people away from getting involved in crime and teach them valuable new skills.

"It was great to see first-hand the range of activities, from mentoring to citizenship programmes at schools like Hillside Primary, aimed at teaching youngsters to become responsible adults."
