BROMLEY’S police force has seen a 12 per cent drop in officers since 2010, according to data highlighted by a London Assembly member.

Labour’s Len Duvall AM has said the borough’s lost 60 police officers and 94 Police Community Support Officers since the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, took control – and is calling for the cuts to be reversed.

Referencing figures on a government database, Mr Duvall, who sits of the Police and Crime Committee at City Hall, said the capital should have a better deal when combating crime.

He said: “On Boris Johnson’s watch we’ve seen the erosion of policing in London and in our borough.

“When he stood for re-election he promised to maintain numbers at 32,000 but he has failed to do this. According to his own figures he has cut police officer numbers by over 3,000 and halved PCSOs.”

Mr Duvall added the Met Police is now “the third least visible on the streets” compared with other parts of the country.

He also mentioned after the government cut the policing budget by 20 per cent, the mayor should “stand up for Londoners”. Mr Duvall’s now proposed a budget amendment for 2014/15 that would see over 1,000 PCSOs and 250 Safer Transport Team Police Officers recruited to help “plug the gap”.

The mayor’s office responded to the calls and said although numbers have fallen, they are now only set to increase from now on – with Bromley getting 54 officers by 2015.

Stephen Greenhalgh, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime said: “Police numbers have fallen because recruitment was paused during the Olympic year and it takes time to hire and train new officers.

“However the current total is as low as I expect it to go, and from next month police numbers will start to rise again.”

The mayor’s press office also said the way police officer resources were allocated changed in 2011.
