Police need more protection

PEOPLE who assault police officers should receive mandatory prison sentences, according to north Kent's area commander.

Chief Superintendent Gary Beautridge says would-be attackers should know they will be definitely locked up.

He believes this would lead to a fall in assaults and also teach attackers a lesson.

Mr Beautridge was speaking following the release of figures which show 271 officers have been assaulted in north Kent in the past two years.

In reality, these figures are likely to be higher as they do not include assaults which have taken place in the current financial year, which began last April.

Under the Freedom of Information Act, News Shopper has learned there were 126 assaults in north Kent from April 2005 to last March.

Of those officers assaulted, 43 suffered injuries.

The number of assaults on police officers was even higher in the previous financial year, with 145 assaults reported, all of which resulted in injury.

Many of the incidents occurred when officers were arresting people.

However, at least one attack was completely unprovoked, while another occurred when a person was released from police custody.

Other incidents include an assault using a motor vehicle and while a police officer was restraining someone.

Mr Beautridge, who has been assaulted himself, says this kind of crime is increasing.

He says one of the reasons for the increasing severity of attacks on police nationwide is because people, especially in metropolitan areas, have access to more lethal weapons.

Although the majority of assaults on police in Kent seem to be minor, Mr Beautridge says they still need to be dealt with seriously.

Assaults on officers can have severe consequences for them, their families and colleagues.

They can be moved to desk duties until they feel safe enough to return to work or given time off to recuperate.

Mr Beautridge has pledged to use every ounce of influence the police have to punish offenders and use every means at their disposal.

He said: "We want people to go to prison for this offence.

"We live in a sometimes volatile world and the very nature of policing brings officers in contact with sometimes violent situations.

"What we tend to have in Kent, which is a safe place to live and police, is an increase in minor assaults on police."

North Kent police's head of operations, Chief Inspector Dave Cooper, says aggression towards officers is a daily occurrence.

He said: "I believe everyday arrests are made and on at least one occasion an officer receives a push.

"Resisting arrest goes on the statement of the officer but it will not normally come as a separate charge.

"We are far more tolerant as far as the justice system is concerned in this country."

I feel all people who assault the police should be locked up. who else is going to help ensure our safety on a daily basis. we in kent need more officers on the road and streets, we need to address how long officers spend dong paperwork and make police more operational, not admin based.

We do not spend lots of money training Police so that they can do paperwork.Community Police do not have any powers and a waste of money.

The police service in England and Wales is a joke when it comes to prosecuting people who feel they have the right to assault police officers executing thier duties. I can say that if you were to walk into any magistrates court on a morning you will find at least 3 defendants facing that charge. The Area Commander of North Kent has done the right thing in defending his officers. All we need to ensure that the Crown Prosecution Service back this proposal. or even better still the CPS solicitors out of thier cosy warm office and spend a night out with the officers during a busy set of weekend shifts. I believe everyone somewhere or sometime has seen a police officer rolling around on the floor with a violent prisoner they have arrested in a High street or somewhere similar. Would we the public like to trade places?? I think not.. This article needs to be put on the Front Page of local papers to bring the subject to the attention of criminals who think its right to abuse and assault the police. Also who would want to hurt those two good looking officers in the picture??

I totally agree... All the courts impose is a 20 quid fine or something similar, then let them go. using the excuse that prisons are full, so give them a suspended sentence... Magistrates are having a laugh, its like a circus

I 100% agree with Chief Superintendent Gary Beautridge on this issue however I believe it should apply to all emergency services as each provide a level of care. If you are hurt you call an Ambulance if your in trouble you call the police. I do believe the courts need to impose sentences that will send out a message and make examples out of those who commit these crimes against the people who protect them. One thought to leave you with I bet you the people who assult these officers when they are in trouble will call the police for help and will be the first to complain if they didnt arrive for whatever reason.

He says one of the reasons for the increasing severity of attacks on police nationwide is because people, especially in metropolitan areas, have access to more lethal weapons,I do not agree it's because in most cases the police, harrass, goad and bring it on their self,so its their own fault. I have no faith in the police force at all.

The last two comments are a load of rubbish, your single minded and arrogant, let me guess you live in a crappy estate full of drug takers, and youngsters that break into peoples houses when your sleeping... Dont call the police when you need help, sorry to hear your son got assaulted, Thats a horrible thing... you have obviously have had a bad experience with the police, they just dont have the resources to spend alot of time on a minor investigation, I am assuming it was a minor incident...

Anon, actually I live in a £750,000 house on a private estate and I do call the police when necassary. It was NOT a minor incident as it resulted in a lengthy visit to A&E AND I gave the name of the assailant to the Police, who did nothing and actually passed it off as "six of one and half a dozen of the other" that being three teenage boys knocking my little boy about for his mobile 'phone and bus fare. As for resources they always seem to have plenty, I counted 9, of Officers to stand on the roundabout at Bromley Common and look out for expired tax discs. If I were you Anon I would remember the word..Please Lord help me to keep my stupid mouth shut, until such times as I know what the **** I'm talking about!

Nice one Anon, "single minded and arrogant" not like you then with your "crappy estate, full of drug takers" I'll put money on you are or are related to a Plod. However, if you're not you're going to be in for a bit of a wake up if you have a burglary or drive around with a tail light out.
