LEWISHAM Council has announced proposals to cut an extra £10m from its budget - bringing total savings to a whopping £95m over the next four years.

The council says the latest onslaught comes from government proposals on top of £82 million which the council has had to slash from its budget since May 2010.

Mayor of Lewisham Sir Steve Bullock says he is determined to protect the services people valued most but warned of “tough” decisions ahead.

Sir Steve said: “The government continues to cut the money it provides to Lewisham to provide services for our community. Since May 2010 the Council has cut £82 million from its budget.

“We now know following confirmation of the final settlement for local councils that the government expects us to save a further £95 million over the next four years.

“Yet demand and need in the community for high quality local services, especially for those people in real need continues to grow.

“We continue to try wherever possible to reduce our budget by changing the way we do things, driving harder bargains in the services we contract out, and working in partnership with others to save money without affecting front line services.

“And I am determined that we go on protecting the things people value most. But inevitably there will be some tough decisions ahead of us.”
