AN ACTING and singing star’s prize pooch has got in on the act again this week after winning a competition to perform at a Bromley theatre.
Gem Allen, who runs performance school PopGems Academy in Beckenham, saw her dog Betsey, a Chorkie, chosen to appear in West End show The Play That Goes Wrong at the Churchill Theatre this week.
The actress and singer had entered her fluffy companion into Pup Idol, which gave pets the chance to play a cameo role in the production, and was picked out from entries on social media by way of public vote.
Like her owner, Betsey’s also got stage pedigree after featuring alongside her in past shows and plays as well as a pet insurance advert, magazines and books.
The 25-year-old, who’s currently a body model for pop sensation Katy Perry and has been involved in an X Factor tour in the past, said of her dog: "Betsey is no stranger to the stage as she appeared in shows with me.
"We never planned for her to be a star but she always gets involved in everything I do so it just came naturally."
Miss Allen added how delighted she is that Betsey was chosen as she "loves to be the centre of attention", adding that she's especially excited about the Churchill Theatre as it's somewhere very dear to her.
Kimberley Thursford, who works at the venue, said it’s great when animals get involved in productions.
"We had ponies at Christmas time – it’s lovely to have animals involved as it really livens things up," she said.
The play is running this week and finishes on Saturday February 8. Two more dogs were also chosen to feature by producers.
The other winners were Leanne Faulkner, of Maidstone, with her Yorkshire terrier, Hattie, and a cocker spaniel called Alfie, whose owner is Alison George.
