ONE of Deptford's most treasured venues may have reached the end of the line, at least for now.

The Deptford Project train carriage cafe was moved this week and given a temporary new home at Morden Wharf in Greenwich by Cathedral Group - which is redeveloping the venue's old site.

That development will see 121 new homes built along with a new market space and refurbished commerical spaces underneath the arches.

Rebecca Molina, who ran the town centre cafe for five years, said: "The Deptford Project Café showed the positive aspects of regeneration, by using something old, neglected and rejected and helping it become something else, much like the site on which it stood. A landmark was created which helped people to become more aware of Deptford."

Discussions are taking place with Lewisham Council over whether the cafe can return one day.

Cathedral creative director Martyn Evans said: "We all loved The Deptford Project Cafe and were sad to see it close. The railway carriage has to be moved on for now, but we’d love to bring it back to Deptford at some point.

"In the meantime, local people will soon see more activity on site as we put up new hoardings. And, behind the hoardings, an exciting new community will be taking shape which will make a huge contribution to the regeneration of Deptford High Street."
