A THREE month scheme to replace bridge joints on the A2 bridge in Darenth started last night.

The work to replace key components of the structure which allow it to expand and contract with seasonal variations in temperature. This will prolong the life of the bridge that carries the A2 over the B260.

The work will involve overnight carriageway closures and is due to be completed, weather permitting, on Friday, April 4.

Bala Vishnubala, Highways Agency Structures Manager said: “The existing joints are nearing the end of their usable life and need to be replaced to provide safe and reliable journeys for the tens of thousands of drivers on this vital route. We have planned the work to be carried out overnight, when traffic flows are lowest, and in two phases to minimise the disruption.”

The work will be carried out overnight, between 9pm and 5am, and in two phases.

The Londonbound carriageway will be closed between the dedicated link road (to the northbound A282) and the entry slip road from Monday 27 January up to and including Friday 28 February. A fully signed diversion will be in place via the dedicated link road to the northbound A282 and turn at junction 1a to access the junction 2 roundabout.

The coastbound carriageway will be closed between the exit slip road and the link road (from the southbound A282) from Monday 3 March up to and including Friday 4 April. A fully signed diversion will be in place via the northbound A282 and turn at junction 1a to use the dedicated link road to the eastbound A2.
