A FORMER Dartford resident, who saved a man's life during his time in the forces, has been honoured for his time in the Arctic during the Second World War.

Bob Biggs amazed his sister Joyce Gooch, 85, of Morris Gardens, when he wrote to her from his home in Adelaide, Australia, to tell her he had won an Arctic Star medal.

Mr Biggs, 91, lived in Dartford until 1954 when he emigrated to Australia with his wife and he settled.

He is one of the 14 British veterans living in south Australia to receive the medal, which was only approved by the UK government last year.

The accolade honours Second World War veterans who were based in the Arctic.

Mrs Gooch said: "I was overjoyed to get the letter.

"Bob said he was ABC news and they were awarded the medals by the governor of south Australia.

"It has taken seven decades for them to be recognised for one of the worst journeys ever.

"It is lovely to see them finally presented with the medals.

"He also saved a man's life during his time in service."
