A BEXLEY councillor has said he hopes a way can be found to keep a key slice of the borough’s history from moving to Bromley.

Councillor Don Massey has met with the head of a campaign aimed at blocking the proposed relocation of the Bexley Local Studies and Archives Centre from its current home at the Central Library in Bexleyheath.

Campaigner Penny Duggan wants to see thousands of documents, photos and other items from the borough’s past remain in Townley Road and petitions against the proposal have been signed by more than 3,300 people.

The council claims it needs to save £41,000 a year from the service as part of a series of other cuts designed to shave £40 million from the authority’s budget over the next four years.

A public consultation on the proposals ended on December 18.

Councillor Massey said: "The consultation has made clear many local people feel strongly the Local Studies and Archives Centre should remain in the borough.

"Penny Duggan and I discussed several ideas and I will be working with officers to evaluate these in detail."
